Chen Kun-Feng

I started to express my artistic ideas through the pure form of painting. However, these works still extended the real appearance of second hand images, being fundamentally based on the concept of “a journey.” I focused my attention on research into the depiction and painting of perceptual elements initiated by the representative meaning of images. This objective was very much reflected in the essential nature of my own creativity. The illusion sometimes happened in the reality of the painting. In this work the color is applied by hand and layers of color added to virtually create technology-generated images, just as analog methods are used to replicate the process in an effort to transcend formulaically constructed visual forms and limited expressive styles. In this way, mechanically repeated processes achieve a set objective and also address a substantive flaw, utilizing a standard computer model to virtually establish a flawed technique that seeks out an uncontrollable mechanical outcome.

Through the inner essence of the work, the transformed shapes and virtual narrative images are restored to their original appearance. My works consistently probe the possibility and limits of formal change within this cycle of “virtuality equals reality.” As such, they make use of the virtualization and distortion of images to spark a part of the artist’s inner world that may seem lacking, but remains replete with emotional meaning.
